Is the BMW M3 CSL a good investment?
E46 (2003–2004)
The thesis
The E46 M3 CSL is BMW's last lightweight, naturally aspirated inline-six M3 special: 3.2L S54 tuned to 355 hp, carbon body panels, and just 1,383 built (none for the US officially—gray imports only). UK/EU market data shows £82k median, with top examples hitting £280k but typical sales £65k–£100k. It's the 'last of breed' for the legendary S54 and the Coupe Sport Lightweight badge. However, the SMG gearbox (not a true manual) is a major collector deduction, and the US market has zero official cars—importation complexity and weaker brand cachet vs. Porsche/Ferrari limit upside. Strong enthusiast car, but not maximum appreciation.
